If you can't foster or adopt, then consider volunteering as a special friend or mentor to a child in foster care.

Burke County's Be A Friend program is similar to the national Big Brothers / Big Sisters program.  The volunteer is paired with a particular foster child in their area.  The purpose of the volunteer is to be a friend and mentor to the child.  These children need someone who they can have fun with and confide in.  The volunteer should be available to spend time with the child for at least a few hours every month.  It doesn't require a special occasion or expensive activities.

Some of the activities may include:

Shooting hoops
Playing a board game
Going out to eat
Walking in the park
Or just hanging out and talking

To be eligible to participate in this program the volunteer must be at least 21 years of age and have a clean criminal history.  After reviewing an informational booklet on the program, the volunteer will be asked to take a test.
